چکیده

Recent parameter matching methods for multiple wavetable synthesis have used a simple relative spectral error formula to measure how accurately the synthetic spectrum matches an original spectrum [1]. It is supposed that the smaller the spectral error, the better the match, but this is not always true. This paper describes a modified error formula, which takes into account the masking characteristics of our auditory system, as an improved measure of the perceived quality of the matched spectrum. Selected instrument tones have been matched using both error formulae, and resynthesized. Listening test results show that wavetable matching using the perceptual error formula slightly outperforms ordinary matching, especially for instrument tones that have several masked partials.

Methods for Multiple Wavetablesynthesisof Musical Instrument Tones*

Spectrum matching of musical instrument tones is a fundamental problem in computer music. Two methods are presented for determining near-optimal parameters for the synthesis of harmonic musical instrument or voice sounds using the addition of several fixed wavetables with time-varying weights. The overall objective is to find wavetable spectra and associated amplitude envelopes which together p...

Extended Principal Components Analysis Matching with spectral Weighting for Wavetable synthesis

Wavetable matching of musical instrument tones using principal components analysis (PCA) takes advantage of spectral correlation information to find the basis spectra. Although PCA matching is efficient, it usually poorly matches the low-amplitude parts of a tone due to its inherent statistical bias. This paper describes weighted PCA methods that normalize the tone before PCA to fairly weight i...

Wavetable interpolation of Multiple Instrument tones

Previous work on multiple wavetable interpolation synthesis has focused on modeling single instrumental tones, using a different set of basis spectra for each. However, the amount of space used to store the wavetable banks needed to resynthesize many different tones would be reduced if at least some of the wavetables were selected for their general-purpose use in synthesizing multiple tones. Th...

Multidimensional perceptual scaling of musical timbres.

Two experiments were performed to evaluate the perceptual relationships between 16 music instrument tones. The stimuli were computer synthesized based upon an analysis of actual instrument tones, and they were perceptually equalized for loudness, pitch, and duration. Experiment 1 evaluated the tones with respect to perceptual similarities, and the results were treated with multidimensional scal...

Compression and Decompression of Wavetable Synthesis Data

Table look-up (or wavetable) synthesis methods have been widely used for many years in music synthesizers. Recently wavetable music synthesis has received new interest in the context of mobile applications such as personalized ring tones and pager notification signals. The limited amount of storage and processing available in such mobile devices makes the use of compressed wavetable data desira...
